Collegial Dialogue – June 3, 2011
What is the best professional development? COLLEGIAL DIALOGUE. Professional development does not occur alone, in a workshop, or in the dark. Let me clarify…
According to the The Free Dictionary Online:
COLLEGIAL is “characterized by or having power and authority vested equally among colleagues;” and, DIALOGUE is “conversation between two or more people.”
This professional conversation is going beyond complaining, griping, and feeling unsatisfied. Collegial dialogue is about having mutual respect, honest responses, and deep understanding. It is not about lying or coercing… it’s about sharing and negotiating.
I love professional development. I am so lucky that I am still engaged with public education and fellow colleagues to talk about math education, leadership, and Assessment for Learning. That’s what I’m going to do today… out for lunch with a good friend to yap about math. Lucky me.
